Helping hand for retail start-ups

Helping hand for retail start-ups

Capital & Regional and Aviva Investors has launched a competition at each of The Mall Fund's community shopping centres to encourage retail start-ups.

The Retail Factor competition allows new businesses to trial a new retail concept on a retail merchandising unit (RMU) for a fortnight, and the best at each centre is rewarded with a prize worth £10,000 that includes rent free trade at The Mall.

It will run across the Fund's 11 community shopping malls and is being supported by The National Skills Academy for Retail. By giving new businesses a helping hand and providing them with a high footfall trading location from which to build a customer base, the competition aims to encourage a new wave of retail entrepreneurs across the UK.

The entry deadline is 20th February 2011, when each of the Malls will select candidates with the strongest potential. The short-listed applicants will be offered the chance to trial their businesses and, on the basis of their success, a panel of key regional business people will select an overall winner at each centre. The winners will each receive a start-up package worth £10,000 that includes two months' of rent-free trade at The Mall, free business mentoring from The National Skills Academy for Retail, a Sony laptop and the chance to win a place at the exclusive week-long retail business course, BHF-BSSA Oxford Summer School.

On behalf of The Mall, Izzie Peskett, national marketing manager at Capital & Regional comments: "This competition has been designed to give those with a great idea the chance to turn it into a business. By running it across all 11 of The Mall Fund's community shopping centres we hope to give budding businesspeople the chance to create a new future for themselves by helping them take that all important first step on the retail ladder. We are proud to be promoting entrepreneurship through this great competition and look forward to seeing what applications come through."

The competition was won last year by Delainey Fashion Accessories.

Entries to The Retail Factor can be made online at or by completing a form available at each of The Mall's Ask Me Points. The Malls are located in Barnsley, Blackburn, Camberley, Luton, Maidstone, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Sutton Coldfield, Uxbridge, Walthamstow and Wood Green.
