A local authority in Essex is spearheading a new initiative to support its high street and town centre retailers.
Braintree District Council has launched the Loving Your High Street awards to celebrate and spread the word about the best places to go in the area.
The aim is to encourage local residents to vote for their favourite high street or town centre business. Votes can be cast for any retail business from shops to spas, cafés and bars - any outlet that's a pleasure for shoppers to visit.
The most popular choice from each of the district's three towns, Braintree, Witham and Halstead plus one from a smaller town or village will win the 2011 Loving your High Street Award. All those who voted for the winners will be entered into a free prize draw to win £150 worth of shopping vouchers to spend in the winning premises.
By the end of the campaign, Braintree District Council aims to share all the views and recommendations received on the best places to go in the towns, via its website.
Councillor Nigel Harley commented: "This is a great way to celebrate our towns and raise the profile of the many great retail businesses that can be found in the district. I'm really looking forward to reading about the places our residents love to go and helping to spread the word about all the best places to visit in the district."
The Loving Your High Street awards are part of the council's new Talk of the Towns campaign which aims to celebrate the towns and encourage trade; identify areas for improvement and create thriving and sustainable town centres.
Votes have to be in by Monday 28th February 2011. To find out more visit the website www.braintree.gov.uk/talkofthetowns
