Catch up on all the latest in our news round up THE HOME & GIFT ASSOCIATION ENCOURAGES MEMBERS TO ENGAGE WITH UK CERAMIC TABLEWARE TRADE REVIEW The Home & Gift Association is urging affected businesses across the home and gift sector to engage with a new Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) review that could have important implications for ceramic product sourcing, pricing and supply chains. The review, launched on 20 July 2026, will examine the effectiveness of existing anti-dumping measures on ceramic tableware and kitchenware imported from China and assess whether current duties remain appropriate. The investigation follows evidence identified by the TRA showing that imports of ceramic tableware and kitchenware from China increased by 22 percent between 2023 and 2025, while import values fell significantly during the same period. The Authority will now consider whether existing duties continue to offset unfair trading practices and protect UK industry. The Home & Gift Association believes the review is relevant to a wide range of businesses throughout the sector, including importers, wholesalers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers and brand owners that source or sell ceramic products. Gemma Sault MD at Home & Gift Association, said: “This review has the potential to impact many businesses operating within the home and gift market. Ceramic tableware and kitchenware products are a significant category for many retailers and brands, and any future changes to duty levels could influence sourcing decisions, product costs and pricing strategies. “We encourage members to familiarise themselves with the review, consider registering with the TRA where appropriate, and ensure their voice is heard as part of the process.” The TRA has made registration forms available for businesses wishing to participate in the review, including importers, exporters, producers and other interested parties. Registered businesses will be able to receive updates, submit evidence and contribute to the investigation process. The Home & Gift Association has confirmed that it will be registering its interest in the investigation and will monitor developments closely on behalf of its members. As further information becomes available, the Association will: • Share updates and guidance with members • Circulate relevant surveys and consultation requests • Gather sector feedback • Highlight key deadlines and opportunities to participate • Support members in understanding the potential implications of the review The Association encourages any member involved in the manufacture, import, distribution or sale of ceramic tableware and kitchenware to review the investigation and consider whether participation would be beneficial to their business. For further updates, members should watch The Home & Gift Association’s communications channels, where future developments from the TRA review will be shared as they emerge. INDUSTRY NEWS 9
UK GARDEN RETAILERS MUST LOOK BEYOND THE SPRING PEAK TO GROW DEMAND, SAYS GLOBALDATA Garden retailers are missing an opportunity to drive year-round demand by concentrating promotional activity around the spring peak, when consumer purchasing is already at its strongest, according to GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform. GlobalData’s latest report, “UK Retail Hot Topics: Gardening 2026,” reveals that 70.9 percent of consumers begin purchasing gardening products between March and May. However, younger shoppers offer retailers a route to more consistent demand throughout the year. Consumers aged 25-34 are the least likely to have access to a garden or outdoor space (69.2 percent have garden access), which helps explain why they are also the most likely age group to purchase gardening products all year round (35.7 percent). With less reliance on conventional garden spaces, demand among the 25-34 age group is more likely to come through smaller, lifestyle-led missions such as balcony planting, indoor growing, houseplants and grow-your-own projects, which garden centres can tap into to attract a new customer base and achieve more consistent revenue throughout the year. Ashley Adeyemi, Retail Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Spring will always remain the key trading period for gardening, but retailers cannot rely on seasonal demand alone to grow the category. Weather is still the biggest purchase trigger, but its influence is weakening, while replacement purchases, hobby gardening, and new outdoor spaces are becoming more important. Retailers must therefore create reasons for consumers, particularly younger shoppers, to engage beyond the traditional spring peak.” Reduced prices (47.2 percent) and percentage discounts (45.6 percent) are the most attractive types of promotional offers to consumers when selecting a retailer, but garden centres should use these offers to encourage follow-up purchases throughout the year, not just to win share during the busiest months. Consumers aged 25-34 are also the most responsive to spend-threshold discounts (42.7 percent), likely reflecting their status as newer gardeners. LONG-SERVING JOE DAVIES REPRESENTATIVE JONATHAN BROOKE TO RETIRE AFTER 22 YEARS Joe Davies has announced that long-serving Area Representative Jonathan Brooke will retire in January 2027, bringing to a close an outstanding 22-year career with the employee-owned giftware company. Jonathan, who looks after customers throughout South West England and Wales, has been a familiar face to retailers across the region since joining Joe Davies in 2004. During that time, he has built countless long-standing customer relationships, become a trusted member of the Joe Davies sales team and played an important part in the company’s continued success. David Cree, Sales Director at Joe Davies, commented: “Jonathan has made an enormous contribution to Joe Davies over the past 22 years. His dedication to our customers, his professionalism and the way he has represented our business have been second to none. “Personally, I hold Jonathan in the very highest regard. He is one of the very best people in our industry and has become a valued colleague and friend to so many of us over the years. Whilst we’ll all miss working with Jonathan, we’re absolutely delighted for him as he looks forward to a long, happy and thoroughly welldeserved retirement.” As part of its succession planning, Joe Davies will shortly begin recruiting a new Area Representative to work alongside Jonathan ahead of his retirement, ensuring customers continue to receive the high levels of service and continuity they have come to expect. Jonathan will remain with the business until January 2027, continuing to support customers and helping to ensure a smooth handover to his successor.” www.joedavies.co.uk INSIDE OUT TOYS BECOMES THE NEW HOME OF PREMIUM CHILDREN’S RIDE-ONS Inside Out Toys has been appointed sole UK distributor for the award-winning Wheelybug and Trybike brands, strengthening its position as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of premium children’s ride-ons. ESSEX CHILDRENSWEAR BRAND WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION TO EXHIBIT AT SPRING FAIR An entrepreneur from Colchester has been selected as one of just 18 small businesses from across the UK to win a free exhibition stand at Spring Fair 2027, Europe’s leading retail experience, after impressing judges in a nationwide competition run in partnership with retail entrepreneur Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday (#SBS). Moon and Bear, founded by Imani Turner, designs and handmakes premium children’s clothing and accessories in Essex with original prints inspired by childhood adventure, and was chosen from hundreds of applicants to exhibit within the dedicated #SBS Village at Spring Fair, taking place at the NEC Birmingham from 7–10 February 2027. The prize gives the business the opportunity to showcase its products to thousands of retail buyers from independent retailers, department stores, garden centres and major high street brands, helping accelerate its wholesale growth and open doors to new stockists across the UK and beyond. Spring Fair’s partnership with #SBS was created to help emerging independent businesses access the retail industry and connect directly with buyers. Now in its eighth year, the initiative has helped launch over 100 successful retail brands. Fay Tranter, Event Director at Spring Fair said: “Every year we’re inspired by the incredible creativity, passion and entrepreneurial spirit within the #SBS community, but this year’s entries raised the bar once again. The quality of applications was outstanding, making the judging process incredibly difficult. Moon and Bear is a fantastic example of the innovation and originality that independent businesses bring to the retail industry. We’re delighted to welcome them to Spring Fair 2027 and look forward to introducing their products to thousands of retail buyers from across the UK and internationally. We can’t wait to see where this opportunity takes them.” CARDGAINS LOOKS TO THE FUTURE WITH AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR GROWTH CardGains is entering an exciting new chapter, with a renewed focus on growth, stronger supplier partnerships and providing even greater value to independent retailers across the UK. BULLDOG TO LICENCE TEAM GB Bulldog Licensing, one of the leading agencies in Europe, has announced its appointment as licensing agent for Team GB, the nation’s favourite sports team. Team GB’s mission is to unite and inspire the nation, and it does so by selecting the country’s finest athletes to compete in the Olympic sports at the greatest sporting competition in the world, the Olympic Games. With one of the most trusted and recognised brands in British sport, Team GB has partnered with Bulldog to create fresh momentum in the licensing sector ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and beyond. Team GB’s online store boasts big selling items in sportswear, leisurewear and accessories, but as interest grows ahead of the summer games in two years’ time, Bulldog and Team GB will work together to expand their offering across homeware, gifting, novelties, sporting equipment, calendars, cards, stationery and more. Regarded as one of the most successful Olympic nations of all time, Team GB enjoyed a record-breaking Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina earlier this year, and Bulldog will be working to ensure that the public’s love for the brand at Games-time is extended into year-round retail opportunities. Amber Jeffries Keel, Senior Licensing and Retail Manager for Team GB says: “We’re delighted to be working with Bulldog to expand and enhance the reach of the now iconic Team GB brand. We know that the public recognise and respect the extraordinary efforts of Team GB’s athletes and we want to be able to capitalise on that love and ensure everyone can show their support for the team through an increased licensed product offering.” Bulldog MD Rob Corney adds: “Team GB is the standard bearer for excellence in British sport and we are delighted to able to partner with them at this exciting time ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. With that in mind, now is an ideal time to further grow the reach of the Team GB brand with a series of carefully chosen and appropriate licensees. And we’re ready. In fact, you could say that the Bulldog team plans to hit the ground running!” HIGHLAND SOAP COMPANY WINS GOLD AT SCOTTISH DESIGN AWARDS FOR FIRST MAJOR REBRAND IN 30 YEARS The family-run organic soap and skincare maker, based at the foot of Ben Nevis, took home gold in the Brand Identity – Consumer category for the rebrand, which spans identity, packaging, signage, messaging, advertising and point of sale. The Highland Soap Company also won silver in the Packaging category, recognising the scale of a redesign rolled out across more than 180 SKUs (stock keeping units). Created by Freytag Anderson, the new identity is built around the positioning line, “The Highlands. In Essence.”, designed to capture the space, clarity and calm of the Highland landscape while giving the business a more confident platform for future growth. At the heart of the design is a bespoke skyline inspired by Ben Nevis, which can be seen from The Highland Soap Company’s workshop near Fort William, where its products are still made by hand. Rather than leaning into familiar Scottish clichés, Freytag Anderson distilled the Highlands into a quieter, more contemporary identity, using hand-painted ink textures, refined colour pairings and clearer packaging to help customers navigate the range. The updated packaging moves away from generic apothecary cues towards bespoke green vessels, new bottle shapes and expanded label space, allowing provenance, ingredients and product information to come through more clearly. Freytag Anderson worked across the full brand experience, from strategy and positioning to packaging architecture, product navigation, signage and advertising. The result is a cohesive identity designed to support The Highland Soap Company as it grows across retail, hospitality and international markets. For The Highland Soap Company, the award marks a major milestone in the evolution of a heritage Scottish brand which has grown from a home kitchen in the 1990s into a business supplying retailers across the UK and internationally, as well as more than 1,000 hospitality businesses. Archie MacDonald, Managing Director at The Highland Soap Company, said: “Rebranding a business with this much history is not something you take lightly. “Our customers know us, they trust us, and many have grown up with the brand, so there was a real responsibility to protect that connection while giving the business room to grow. “To win gold at the Scottish Design Awards for that work is a huge moment for us. It feels like real recognition of the care that went into the project, and of the team’s ability to move the brand forward, while staying true to where we come from.” Daniel Freytag, Co-Founder and Creative Director at Freytag Anderson, said: “It is a real privilege to see this work recognised with gold at the Scottish Design Awards. “The Highland Soap Company is a brand with a strong story, loyal customer base and a genuine connection to place, so the responsibility was to create an identity that could do that justice. “This award recognises the ambition of the whole project, from strategy and positioning through to packaging, signage and communications. It was a major undertaking across more than 180 SKUs, and the win is a brilliant reflection of the trust, collaboration and craft behind it.” Now in its twenty-ninth year, the Scottish Design Awards celebrate Scotland’s most inspiring architecture, creativity and design, recognising work shaped by Scotland’s people, places and culture. Recognised as the UK’s most respected awards programme for the home and gift industry, Gift of the Year continues to champion innovation, creativity and commercial excellence. As the competition opens for a new year, entrants can look forward to even greater value, enhanced exposure, and exciting new opportunities, with entry prices frozen for 2027. More value, more exposure, same entry price Over recent years, Gift of the Year has evolved into far more than an awards competition. For 2027, entrants will once again gain access to a platform designed to put products in front of influential retailers, buyers, distributors, and industry experts, all while keeping entry costs the same as the previous year. New luxury gift category introduced Among the exciting updates for 2027 is the introduction of a brand-new Luxury Gift Category, created to recognise premium products that deliver exceptional craftsmanship, quality, and desirability within the gift market. The category reflects the continued growth of the luxury gifting sector and provides a dedicated space for brands creating products that offer a premium gifting experience. The return of ICONS The ever-popular My Gift of all time will return as the ICONs category also returns for 2027. A favourite among both entrants and the industry, this unique category allows brands to celebrate products that have stood the test of time, whether they launched recently or many years ago. Destination retail drives growth in retail solutions and experiences at Autumn Fair and Glee Across home, gift, fashion and garden retail, businesses are increasingly recognising that success isn’t driven by product alone. Buyers are arriving at trade shows looking not only for the next bestselling products, but also for the expertise, technology and services that will help them sell those products more effectively. That shift is reflected in one of the fastest-growing areas across both Autumn Fair and Glee 2026. Whilst the sectors carry different names - Retail Solutions at Autumn Fair and Retail Experiences & Services at Glee - both are expanding in response to growing demand for specialist expertise, AIpowered innovation, operational support and technologies that help retailers work smarter, improve customer experiences and drive long-term profitability. Taking place at the NEC Birmingham this September, Autumn Fair (6th - 9th September) and Glee (8th - 10th September) will welcome more than 1,250 exhibitors, showcase over 500,000 products and attract more than 20,000 retail buyers, creating Europe›s largest buying event for home, gift, fashion and garden retail. Different names. One shared ambition Although Retail Solutions and Retail Experiences & Services have been developed for different audiences, they share the same purpose: helping retailers build stronger, more resilient businesses. Whether serving high streets, shopping destinations or modern garden centres, today’s retailers face many of the same challenges. Rising operating costs, changing customer expectations and rapid advances in technology are driving investment in smarter ways of working, with businesses increasingly looking beyond the products they sell to the systems and expertise that support commercial success. Claire Gatenby, Co-Founder of Squashed Pixel who will be offering free Shopify Clinics during Autumn Fair to help retailers tackle real business challenges, said: “Retail has never been more connected. Customers don’t distinguish between online and offline anymore; they simply expect every interaction to feel effortless. The retailers seeing the strongest growth are those investing in technology that removes friction, empowers staff and creates one consistent customer experience across every channel.” Technology may be one of the fastest-moving areas of retail, but exhibitors across both shows agree that its role is not to replace great retailing - it’s to give retailers better information, better insight and more time to focus on the customer. www.autumnfair.com, www.gleebirmingham.com Spring Fair and Theo Pathitis #SBS Partnership announce record 18 small business winners for 2027 Spring Fair, the UK’s leading Home, Gift & Fashion retail experience, has announced the 18 winners of its 2027 Spring Fair x #SBS Small Business Sunday competition, giving a record number of entrepreneurs the opportunity to exhibit free of charge at the show’s dedicated #SBS Village when Spring Fair returns to the NEC Birmingham from 7–10 February 2027. Now entering its eighth year, the partnership between Spring Fair and retail entrepreneur Theo Paphitis continues to provide one of the UK’s most valuable launchpads for emerging retail brands. This year’s competition saw a significant increase in interest, with applications up by around 10% and judges commenting on the exceptional quality and diversity of entries. A record 18 businesses have secured fully funded exhibition stands through the partnership, representing a 50 percent increase on previous years and pushing the total number of businesses supported to well over 100. Theo Paphitis, TV Dragon, Retail Entrepreneur and Small Business Champion said: “The partnership between #SBS Small Business Sunday and the Spring & Autumn Fair team has now been running for eight years, and with this year’s competition we will have awarded over 100 free stands to small business owners. Year on year, the connections and relationships formed within the #SBS Village demonstrate just how valuable this opportunity is for growing businesses. It is a genuinely business-boosting experience, and I am already looking forward to meeting this year’s 18 finalists. Spring Fair continues to be a hub of opportunity, fresh thinking and new connections.” Fay Tranter, Event Director at Spring Fair added: “Every year we’re inspired by the incredible talent coming through the #SBS community, but this year’s entries raised the bar again - the quality was outstanding, making the judging process incredibly difficult. These 18 businesses represent exactly what independent retail is all about - creativity, resilience, originality and entrepreneurial spirit. One of the things I love most about Spring Fair is seeing businesses at the very beginning of their wholesale journey. Through the #SBS Village we’ll be able to support these brands from day one, introducing them to thousands of retail buyers and giving them the platform, confidence and connections to accelerate their growth. We can’t wait to welcome them to Spring Fair 2027 and see where this opportunity takes them.” Taking place at the NEC Birmingham, Spring Fair 2027 will once again bring together thousands of buyers and brands across home, gift, fashion, and outdoor living, offering unrivalled opportunities for networking, sourcing and growth. Spring Fair 2027 takes place 7th – 10th February 2027 at the NEC Birmingham. 15 NEWS & EVENTS

British soft toy company Jomanda has unveiled Cone Coo™, an irresistibly soft Highland Cow sporting Scotland’s most famous unofficial headwear. Inspired by the iconic traffic cone placed on the Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow, Cone Coo™ is a playful celebration of Scottish humour, character and culture – all wrapped up in one exceptionally cuddly coo. The quirky design has already gone viral online, creating a huge buzz across social media and attracting hundreds of registrations of interest ahead of launch. And the excitement is not limited to Scotland. Following the 2026 football celebrations and the arrival of the Tartan Army in Boston, Cone Coo™ has struck a chord with fans and buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. Interest has come from retailers across the UK and the USA, proving that apparently everyone loves a Highland Cow wearing a traffic cone. “We wanted to create something that simply made people smile,” says Leanne Houghton of Jomanda. “Highland Cows are loved all over the world, but only in Scotland could one end up wearing a traffic cone! What started as a fun celebration of Scottish humour has really captured people’s imaginations. “We knew Cone Coo™ would raise a few smiles, but we never expected the reaction it received online. From Glasgow to Boston and beyond, people seem to have completely fallen for it.” For over 21 years, Jomanda has been creating beautifully soft plush gifts that have found homes around the world. A rich, atmospheric home fragrance inspired by the craftsmanship, character and the ritual of whisky-making on the Isle of Arran. Created on the island, the collaboration brings together two brands rooted in island life, celebrating a connection between land, sea, scent and spirit. Co-created with the distillery to reflect the warmth and complexity associated with Lagg’s peated single malt whisky, the candle captures the essence of the distillery experience through scent from smoky fires and ageing oak casks to the stillness of the island landscape that surrounds it. Opening with notes of malted barley and soft spice, the fragrance unfolds into a heart of honeyed sherry and worn leather, before settling into a deep base of peat smoke, tobacco and oak. The result is a refined, warming scent designed to bring the spirit of Arran indoors. Launching as part of the evolving ARRAN home collection, the candle reflects growing demand for more immersive, character-led home fragrance and gifting experiences, combining the sensory world of whisky with contemporary interiors and lifestyle. www.arran.com HABULOUS The everyday objects in your home should feel personal, purposeful and made to last.
