Protecting Wildlife for the Future Puffins spend most of their lives at sea and are excellent swimmers, using their wings to ‘fly’ under the water. On land for just sixteen weeks a year, male puffins present females with gifts of grass or feathers, and they often become mates for life. Both parents take turns to incubate a single egg which is laid inside a burrow on the cliff tops. They also share the task of catching and feeding sand eels to the ‘puffling’. The Wildlife Trusts are on a mission to restore at least a third of the UK’s land and seas for nature by 2030. We believe everyone, everywhere, should have access to nature and all the joy and health benefits it brings us. No matter where you are in the UK, there is a Wildlife Trust inspiring people about the natural world and standing up for wildlife and wild places near you. Visit wildlifetrusts.org/support-us. Protecting Wildlife for the Future As their name suggests mandarin ducks are a non-native species. Though shy, these pristine and colourful fowl can be seen year-round in the UK, with the largest populations in the south. As they are declining in their native range, the non-native European populations could become an important stronghold for the species. Unusually for ducks, they nest in tree hollows, often high off the ground, where their young fledge the nest long before they can fly, tumbling unhurt to the floor.
