93 COMPANY PROFILE A fine form David Wilkinson from Blue Poppy Arts discusses the beauty of the company’s sculptures, it’s best sellers, and how he’s converted to the power of social media When did you start up and why? I started the business in 1993 when a sculptor I knew offered me some designs in what was then a unique finish. What prompted you to launch the business? After 25 years with one company, internal politics made me resign and I was looking for income – I had two small children (or they were small!) to be looked after. What challenges have you overcome since the company’s launch? There were financial initially. I used to have a bank manager who insisted I put money aside each week to pay the VAT. Also, a distribution agreement I entered into with another gift trade supplier was a complete disaster and we almost closed. They taught me so much about how not to do things! Gradually the demands of running the business has taken me away from selling, which is what I enjoy. The current pandemic and the spin offs from it (taxation increases, loss of retailers etc) are challenges for next year. Tell us about your product offering. We offer a truly British made and designed range of bronze finish sculptures – our secret lies in our ability to keep introducing new, exclusive and popular animal models, which the consumer likes! What are your most popular products? That’s difficult. It started with cats – which are now beginning to be popular again – moved on to Hares, which are still good
