Louise Prance chats to Sean Mahon, director, about the company’s journey so far When did you start up and why? Brandwell has been in business since 1980, originally as part of International Accessories PLC. Then, following a management buyout in 1998 by the Mahon family, the company set about growing its product offering and customer base in the UK and Irish markets. Having gained great experience working in an international accessories company, the management saw a huge opportunity for well-designed accessories and gifts. What prompted you to launch the business? Brandwell expanded into the gifting sector in 2002 when we noticed there was a big gap in the market for moderately priced, well designed and packaged accessories. We already had a very strong retail customer base, so it was an easy add on to our handbag, accessory and hosiery business. What challenges have you overcome since the company’s launch? The constant need for change, moving with the times and unfortunately the demise of many retailers over the years and the potential financial impact.
