March/April 2024

Good or good enough?

I’m writing this Editor’s Letter fresh from my visit to Spring Fair, and what a show it was. The mood from both exhibitors and visitors was positively buoyant, and the event was brimming with newness and innovation. Speaking of which, I made my stage debut as part of the judging panel for the new Pitch Live Gift format, a Dragon’s Den-style pitching session dedicated to new products. My fellow judges and I saw wonderful pitches from exciting companies Ducky Zebra, Willsow and Go On Make Me, before we finally decided on the successful pitch. Head to page 43 to read more about the event and discover who we crowned the winner!

As some of you may or may not know, March is officially B Corp Month, so this issue we’re placing a focus on the benefits of this holistic and transparent certification which encourages better business practices. I had the pleasure of attending a talk on Building a B Corp, which gave wonderful insight from industry professionals on the benefits, both for your business and the planet, of this certification. Head to 58 to hear more from those having already gone through the process, and discover inspiration for your own business.

As ever we have a host of wonderful features for you – this issue focusing on Father’s Day, Made in Britain, Stationery, Food & Drink Gifting, and Candles & Home Fragrances.

Don’t forget to check out our regular features which keep you up-to-date with what’s happening in the industry, from show and industry news, new product launches and business advice.

Enjoy the issue

Farm Shop & Deli Show reveals 2024 retailer awards finalists

Farm Shop & Deli Show has unveiled the regional finalists in its 2024 Retailer Awards, championed by Fieldfare and in partnership with The Grocer – comprising some of the UK's best loved specialist retailers, pillars of their respective communities and champions of great produce and sustainable practice.

Judging took place last November, where an esteemed panel of judges came together in person at Fortnum & Mason in London for a day of deliberations and decisions.

From this they have created their shortlist of category finalists, whittled down from hundreds of entries, by taking into consideration the achievements retailers have made in the independent sector.

The RHS collaborates with Radley on new handbag range

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced a new collaboration with Radley, an industry-leading name in expertly made leather handbags and accessories, that will bring beautiful horticulture-inspired designs to a new collection launching, appropriately enough, in the spring.

The Radley X RHS collection includes handbags, purses and tote bags, and features designs inspired by artwork from the RHS Lindley Collections, the world's finest collection of botanical art, as well as the magnificent RHS Gardens themselves.

In particular the designs are based on the work of admired female artists Caroline Maria Applebee (c1787-1854), whose 300 or more elegant drawings are a fascinating record of social and horticultural history in her time, and Gertrude Jekyll (1843–1932), whose highly influential work laid the basis for modern garden design.

Primeur Managing Director, Jenny Douthwaite, discusses the company's heritage, and highlights its sustainable future... The business began in March 1968. The company was originally founded to supply Grattan mail order catalogue with Stainless Steel Tea service sets from Denmark. Whilst these products are no longer in our ranges, they were pivotal in our launch into the retail sector more than 55 years ago. From day one, our ethos has always been to supply products to our customers that add value to their ranges. Over the years, our sourcing has brought many different products categories to the UK and we continually seek innovation to bring to our customers. We began supplying doormats many decades ago and are very proud of the heritage and reputation we have built in this category.

Retail is top for local gift card sales in 2023 with, 69 percent uplift in 2024 to date

Retail is top for local gift card redemptions in the UK in 2023 says Miconex. Primark, M&S, Boots, Next, Sainsbury's, John Lewis and Aldi are within top national retailers.

Around 50 percent of cards are spent with independent retailers and businesses.

Local gift cards are driving spend in high streets and downtowns around the world, says fintech Miconex as it shares key insights from its local gift card programmes.

The range of independent businesses which accept Miconex's local gift cards – usually alongside a range of national brands – makes the cards unique in the sector. A typical 50 percent, and up to 100 percent, of its local gift cards are redeemed with independent shops, restaurants and venues.
