Gift Focus inc Attire Accessories - July/August 2025

34 As we look ahead to the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference – better known as COP30 – I’ve found myself reflecting on the role our industry plays in the health of our planet. COP30, like its predecessors, will be the world’s largest stage for climate discussions and negotiations. And for those of us in the gift industry – a sector built on producing, well, “stuff” – there’s an undeniable discord between being environmentally conscious and being passionate about the joy our products bring. How do we balance both? You’ve likely heard of the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015. It set out three key goals: 1. Keep global temperature rise well below 2°C, with efforts to limit it to 1.5°C 2. Strengthen countries’ abilities to adapt to climate change 3. Align financial flows with low-carbon, climate-resilient development Despite 194 countries and the European Union signing on, we’re currently far off course. So, where does that leave us? How can our small – but powerful – industry contribute to achieving these ambitious (and necessary) goals? In 2021, COP introduced the Action Agenda, encouraging non-state actors – governments, private sector businesses, and civil society groups – to join forces in delivering real climate solutions. While this was aimed at larger players, surely our industry can take inspiration here? After all, the gift industry thrives on collaboration. Walk the aisles of events like Autumn Fair, Home & Gift, or Spring Fair, and it’s plain to see: we connect, we support each other, we celebrate our shared mission. Could we harness that same collective energy to build a more sustainable future for our industry? Yes, we produce products. But we also create moments of joy, connection, and care. And if we, as a community, begin to integrate sustainable practices into every level of our supply chains – sourcing more responsibly, reducing waste, embracing circularity – we can make a real difference. Independent retail has always been about heart. We care – about our customers, our craft, and our communities. We may not be the biggest players, but we are nimble, values-driven, and deeply human in our approach. That’s our superpower. Now’s the time to show that strength – not just for our businesses, but for the planet we all share. Because climate change isn’t a future problem. It’s here, and it affects us all. Let’s take action – together. Attire Accessories Editor, Louise Prance, asks, can the gift industry be both joyful and sustainable? THE SUSTAINABILITY AGENDA
