The future’s bright Dan Whytock from Down Your High Street assesses the impact of COVID-19 on independent retail The UK’s retail industry had a tough year in 2020 with average footfall dropping by more than 50% compared to the previous year*. 2021 has been better, but with so much uncertainty it hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses either. A significant outlay for most businesses is rent. Lockdown restricted incomes made meeting rental commitments a challenge for many. But not every landlord did, or continues, to come down hard and demand rents. Some even offered rent discounts. If you are struggling to pay your rent, even if you are now open again, it is always a good idea to contact your landlord before you fall behind – you may receive some helpful news. Similarly, many suppliers are being sympathetic to customers who explain any difficulties they are having. SUPPORT SYSTEM Supporting each other through the pandemic and beyond has also encouraged people to buy more from small, local, independent retailers and businesses, and this is certain to continue. Shop Safe, Shop Local campaigns are likely to feature heavily during the second half of 2021 and as we move towards Christmas.
