Probably the biggest thing out of Bali in years, it is already a huge trend in Holland. The products are crafted by hand in Bali from recycled glass and Balinese Gamal wood. This stunning, molten art glass vase brings the best of two worlds together: natural and man-made; earthy and chic; practical and spiritual. The glass is hand-blown and while still hot it is then relaxed over a piece of Gamal root, the glass then hardens to the shape of the wood ensuring a perfect fit. They are crafted using a natural product by using hand tools in the traditional Balinese way. It provides a one-of- a-kind setting for stones and air plants, cut flowers or a wine decanter. www.ancientwisdom.biz/mgw SHARED EARTH Shared Earth’s new glassware from Bolivia is hand- blown. The company says, “Made from recycled glass at a social enterprise in Cochabamba, it’s a high quality range that makes excellent presents for anyone – like most of us these days – who cares about the environment. Its first container with us sold out almost as soon as it arrived. “Anyone who lives nearby can bring glass to the factory to sell, though to keep their products pure, they don’t accept coloured glass; most of it comes from Coke bottles, spirits bottles, and broken windows. These are broken up, washed and melted before being mouth-blown and shaped into glasses, jugs and other products. The factory operates 24 hours, because of the amount of natural gas needed to get the ovens to the required temperature of 1,300 degrees C. They have five ‘maestros’ who blow the glass, and in a 10-hour shift, these maestros can make up to 4,000 pieces – amazing.” Shared Earth is the UK’s top distributor of recycled and sustainable products, buying from 20 countries around the world. A key mission is to tackle climate change and from January this year, all orders have been sent carbon-free, from the producer right through to the final customer.
