144 Tell me a bit about how the label was started. What was the inspiration etc? Although I initially wanted a more creative/fashion-based career as a youngster, I was encouraged by my parents to start with what, at the time, was deemed to be a more ‘stable’ career path that I could always fall back on. As I look back in life, I am very glad that I took their well- intentioned advice. Starting my working life as a Legal PA is a decision I wouldn’t change because it teaches one to have a meticulous eye for detail, be business savvy and think on your feet. It made me more observant and able to work well under pressure. The PA role and my tenacity helped me with setting up my line of appealingly coloured gemstone jewellery brand. I would often wear bright, well put together outfits also in the autumn and winter when most people wore sombre outfits to the office and a number of colleagues would very kindly comment that I always looked well- presented and lovely in my tastefully assembled colour choices. This was often followed by ‘you should be a stylist’ – so that’s what I did, I styled people and did their make-up alongside my job. I know that colourful jewellery all year round completes any outfit and enhances mood. I was always drawn to bold patterns and semi-precious stones and metallics, which must have come from my Ghanaian background. Although born and raised in London, the culture of Ghana is very much within me – in Ghana, people love to make colourful stylish clothes and jewellery with individual patterns. I would often search for jewellery but not be able to find what I was looking for. I felt there was a gap in the market for all year round coloured raw and rustic coloured semi- precious stone jewellery at affordable prices. I initially started sourcing, selling and then built up the confidence to design. This is one of the best decisions I have made. How were the initial products developed and what was the response? I am always drawn to vivid patterns, semi-precious stones and metallics. Ghanaian cloth patterns often feature geometric, circular and tear drop shapes, which is reflected in my jewellery. Ghanaians and Africans general are not shy of making vibrant stylish clothes and jewellery with individual patterns – some of the designs remind me of the unique patina of agate and solar quartz. I design and, from time to time, my skilled artisans offer suggestions and alterations. Together we produce beautiful gemstone jewellery. I’m pleased to say that I have had a great response from my customers. What challenges did you face and how were they overcome when starting the business? Even the best product won’t sell if no one knows about it so spreading
