The Qing dynasty emperors were Manchus, whereas the Cao family were Han Chinese: they helped to explain Chinese culture to the Manchu rulers whilst also embracing aspects of Manchu culture themselves, such as horse riding and hunting, in effect straddling both cultures. Cao Xue Qin’s grandfather had been commissioned by the Emperor Kang Xi to compile all poems written during the Tang dynasty (618 – 907) and produced “The Complete Poems of the Tang.” Unfortunately, when Emperor Kang Xi died in 1772, Kang Xi’s son Yong Zheng attacked the Cao family and they were soon plunged into poverty. It took Cao Xue Qin ten years to write his masterpiece and only received recognition posthumously. The CDs contain pieces such as ‘For My Loved Maid Qing-wen,’ ‘A Raining and Windy Afternoon in Autumn’ and the ‘Handkerchief Melody’, reminiscent of stories within the novel “Dream of the Red Chamber.” The novel is understood to be semi- autobiographical, charting the rise and fall of the Cao family. Mandarin Arts also sells copies of the novel, in three volumes, translated into English. The Jade Face Massager is a Chinese traditional gadget purporting to help remove puffiness on your face and iron out the bags under the eyes to give your face a more sculpted look. By rolling the jade roller gently over your face, you should also begin to feel more relaxed. The wider roller is for the neck, forehead, cheek and jaw areas, whereas the smaller roller is for the delicate area under the eyes. In the summer when it is hot you can put the massager in the refrigerator before use so that it has the added bonus of cooling you down. Jade has always been held in awe by the Chinese because of its hardness, beautiful colours and magical properties. Jadeite and nephrite are more prized than gold and are per gram they are worth more than diamonds. In the past the Chinese even made burial suits out of pieces of jade sewn together with red silk thread. A Jade Face Massager would make a perfect gift for someone who devotes a lot of time to maintaining a smooth complexion.
