From the editor

Good or good enough?

I’m writing this Editor’s Letter fresh from my visit to Spring Fair, and what a show it was. The mood from both exhibitors and visitors was positively buoyant, and the event was brimming with newness and innovation. Speaking of which, I made my stage debut as part of the judging panel for the new Pitch Live Gift format, a Dragon’s Den-style pitching session dedicated to new products. My fellow judges and I saw wonderful pitches from exciting companies Ducky Zebra, Willsow and Go On Make Me, before we finally decided on the successful pitch. Head to page 43 to read more about the event and discover who we crowned the winner!

As some of you may or may not know, March is officially B Corp Month, so this issue we’re placing a focus on the benefits of this holistic and transparent certification which encourages better business practices. I had the pleasure of attending a talk on Building a B Corp, which gave wonderful insight from industry professionals on the benefits, both for your business and the planet, of this certification. Head to 58 to hear more from those having already gone through the process, and discover inspiration for your own business.

As ever we have a host of wonderful features for you – this issue focusing on Father’s Day, Made in Britain, Stationery, Food & Drink Gifting, and Candles & Home Fragrances.

Don’t forget to check out our regular features which keep you up-to-date with what’s happening in the industry, from show and industry news, new product launches and business advice.

Enjoy the issue,

Louise Prance, Editor

Home and garden specialist, Primeur, has launched a new collection of doormats produced under license from Bree Merryn, one of Britain's most popular wildlife artists.

The collection of 18 individual doormat designs made its debut at Spring Fair, where Primeur exhibited for the first time this year.

Bree was on Primeur's stand in Hall 8 to help promote the new collection and catch up with her friends and colleagues in the home and gift industry.

With many retailers already stocking Bree's distinctive wall art and incredibly successful licensed gift collections, the doormats help to create a seamless look throughout the home, from the moment you set foot inside.

Bree commented: “I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Primeur. I've known them for a long time – almost 30 years now – and they're such lovely people and a joy to work with.

"It's also lovely to be here at the forefront of the launch at Spring Fair and the response has been fantastic. There's nothing like this in the market and people have loved it. The designs make you smile when you come to the door!”

Capturing economic potential

Martin McTague, National Chair, the Federation of Small Businesses, shares how we need to think more broadly about innovation policy to capture the full economic potential. To many, the term "innovation" is usually associated with big names such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg. But, in reality, the development and use of new ideas and technology is not confined to the tech industry. We need to think more broadly about innovation policy to capture the full economic potential. A new report by the Federation of Small Businesses – titled The Tech Tonic – found that across all sectors, seven in ten (69 percent) small firms have introduced a new form of innovation in the last three years. This includes the development of an entirely new product(s) to their market (25 percent), significantly improved existing or new product(s) (38 percent), and better staff and customer experience (25 percent).

Constantly creating

When three friends combined their skillset, Crumble & Core was born. Seven years later, the company is going from strength to strength. In 2016 Crumble & Core began its life when three friends Jilly, Lucy and Lou came together with a cuppa around the kitchen table looking at Jilly's beautiful artwork. We wanted to find a way that we could use her incredible art to create a beautiful range of Cards and Gifts.
