November has been an incredible month for greeting card designer and publisher Soula Zavacopoulos. Soula's greeting card business, The London Studio, was picked to feature in a business documentary, which airs at Theo Paphitis' SBS event on 28 November. Soula was interviewed by Business Sense magazine and she impressed three more business tycoons from BBC Dragon's Den.
Soula attended the Inspiring Entrepreneurs event at the British Library in London, part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. The event gave Soula the chance to learn from business expert Doug Richards (who featured in the first series of BBC Dragon's Den) and from current Dragon's Den stars, Kelly Hoppen and Piers Linney.
Soula went to the event to get advice about how to grow The London Studio and discuss her plans for licensing her greeting card ranges onto other products. She says: “The conference was inspiring and talking with the Dragons has spurred me into action! This week I signed a licensing deal with Papyrus Recycled Greetings (owned by American Greetings) to license some of my cards in the USA and Canada. I'm also in talks with other companies about licensing deals for different products – it's an exciting time.”
But it has also been a difficult time for Soula, as she has faced problems. “I trusted someone which turned out to be a mistake, but Kelly Hoppen encouraged me as she said that it's the problems you come across in business that make your business grow. I think she's right as I'm no longer working with them and am now making some great licensing deals and things are really taking off.”
It looks like Soula's new gift book – The Wisdom of Kids – may have two new Dragon fans: Doug Richard and Piers Linney both took a copy of the new book home with them. “Piers said he'd read it to his kids that night which I thought was sweet. I don't think either he or Doug realised former Dragon Theo Paphitis is already a big fan of The Wisdom of Kids. I like that they didn't know that as it meant they weren't influenced when looking at the brand. Though they'll find out soon enough as Theo gave me a quote saying that he loves The Wisdom of Kids and it's printed on the book!” says Soula.
The London Studio won Theo Paphitis' SBS award for small businesses two years ago. He is holding an SBS event at the ICC in Birmingham on 28th November. Some of his team got in touch with Soula to ask her if she would be filmed for a business documentary to be broadcast ahead of Theo's speech. “I found being filmed a little nerve wracking, but it was a great opportunity to showcase my business and my design work to a broad audience, from CEO's of famous brands to small businesses and start-ups to famous entrepreneurs”.
Soula was also interviewed for Business Sense magazine, for an article coming out in December. She was quizzed on business planning and the strategies she uses in her greetings card business, as well as featuring her design work and the new Facebook page for The Wisdom of Kids – which already has almost 25,000 followers in just over six months. To check it out, visit facebook.com/TheWisdomOfKids or connect with Soula on twitter @wisdom_of_kids
The London Studio will be exhibiting at Spring Fair 2014 in Hall 4 (greeting card hall) Stand H74. Visit www.TheLondonStudio.com
