Comic strip star Dennis the Menace celebrates his 60th anniversary this week.
The spiky-haired character made his first appearance in the long-running UK comic, The Beano on March 17th 1951.
Far from getting his bus pass, Dennis remains forever young and will be starring in a special anniversary edition of The Beano on sale from tomorrow (Wednesday 16th March).
The Beano will be embarking on a year of celebration, including a focus on classic Menace give-aways such as catapults, pea-shooters and the like. One of the early highlights of The Year of the Menace is due to involve US President, Barack Obama, as well as cross party support from UK political leaders David Cameron, Ed Milliband and Nick Clegg.
Dennis the Menace started out life as a rough sketch drawn by a member of the Beano staff on the back of a cigarette packet. Under the work of artist David Law, the outline soon evolved into the character known and loved today.
"There's no question that Dennis continues to appeal to kids of all ages and he remains the quintessential menace," said Beano editor Mike Stirling.
Outside the pages of the famous comic Dennis is allied to a range of future developments. As well as successful annuals and the brand new Beano website www.beano.com, Dennis is licensed across a range of different product areas from food to clothing and also stars in the children's television animated series Dennis & Gnasher on CBBC.
The Beano is also doing its bit for this year's Red Nose Day for Comic Relief, with a special edition of the monthly Beano Magazine, BeanoMAX on sale now.
